Immortality

Page history last edited by Anonymous 2 yrs ago

To this day, you can find bold statements on immortality across many belief systems with diverse metaphysical commitments--humanists, post-humanists, alchemists, even some physicists--indeed, we all consider this alternative to mortality at some time or another. So it follows that there are many, many different points of view on the matter of immortality. Chemistry Daily a web site committed to death, immortality, types of immortality , and concepts and beliefs on immortality while providing a compressed yet thorough survey of historical and contemporary perspectives on this question of questions. So lets forget all our previous assumptions and beliefs on immortality and start by reading this site before reading any further, this way I can assume we all start on the same page.

Attention Readers

Now for all of those who will read this, I would like to get some things straight. I am going to try to stay away from the subject of "Religion", I feel this is important because I do not want to offend anyone and their beliefs. I will, however, make some blunt statements to just touch on the relationship between Religion and Immortality and I will try not to offend anyone. If you kind it necessary to leave a comment; please feel free to.

A background on my beliefs

I am not an atheist, but I am not a fan of giving names to religious figures, and saying that one religion is different than another. When broken down they all teach the same thing. More people have died in the name of GOD than anyone in the history of man, and Religion has been the number one cause of war in the history of man. So therefore, I am not a fan of being told what I can and can't do with my life by controlling "religious figures". I believe in a higher being, and to treat people right, but all the mumbo jumbo in between is gray area that I choose to cut out.

With this assignment, I too, was all over the place, I found it very difficult to define such a large topic as Immortality. Immortality, after all suggests a limitless domain or presence, and history shows that successful definitions aim to install limits. Nevertheless, proceeding by example and pointing out for you the interesting and sometimes alarming differences in the ways we humans have tried to think the thought "immortal," an interesting pattern emerges. The belief of immortality has engulfed the human mind because the thought of nothingness after death scares anyone. Therefore, the belief and practice of immortality has ruled and been the center point for almost every major religion throughout history. Every civilization in man kinds history has some sort of belief/religious base that the locals entrust their immortality to. In a sense, I feel that religion was created by man to give comfort and an "understanding" to a confused population. In these creations of religion I feel that the thought of immortality was placed there to give comfort to people and settle minds about e=what happens when you die, because no living person will actually know what happens when you die. Its the "one" question everyone wants an answer to, and immortality gives them an answer. When looking in history at the early Egyptians and then the later Greeks you can see huge traces of immortality in there traditional concepts of religion. The history of immortality is great and can be seen in pretty much every corner of the globe, its provides the answer to one of mans greatest questions "What happens when we die?"

perpetuity of existence. The doctrine of immortality is taught in the Old Testament. It is plainly implied in the writings of Moses (Gen. 5:22, 24; 25:8; 37:35; 47:9; 49:29, comp. Heb. 11:13-16; Ex. 3:6, comp. Matt. 22:23). It is more clearly and fully taught in the later books (Isa. 14:9; Ps. 17:15; 49:15; 73:24). It was thus a doctrine obviously well known to the Jews. In conclusion, with my beliefs and research

I define Physical Immortality as - a myth and truly impossible.

I define memorable immortality as - a way that people are remembered in history and a way that people can live forever.

I define spiritual immortality as - a belief based definition and it will vary from person to person. But scientifically I have not seen evidence of a spiritual life after death.
