So, lately I've been reading a lot about the amount of information produced by humanity. In 2006 we created 161 exabytes of digital information. That's 161,000,000,000,000,000,000 bites or 599,771,738 250 Gigabyte hard drives. That's only 6/10th of a billion of people with full hard drives, though I estimate that there are many more computers in the world than that. All of this electronic junk came from roughly the same place as your discs: the Earth. Plastic and rubber aren't exactly "natural" substances, but they are made with earthbound chemicals, nonetheless. Information is inscribed in the same manner for all of the different types of record, though subtle differences in the production process would have been necessary based upon the substance. These subtleties do not anticipate the digital sea-change in information inscription. Ironically, digital media is more durable in it's plasticity. There are several initiatives that are converting analog media to digital for this very reason. These are immortalized productions. Your information may well exist for another few billion years beyond you. Welcome to the beginning.
