Blog 5 - Peculiar Norms

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 10 months ago

I've been slowing plugging away at Lessig's Free Culture the last couple days and came across one idea in particular that I can't stop thinking about. It may warrant some discussion later on, but I want to put it down so I won't forget.

"We, the most powerful democracy in the world, have developed a strong norm against talking about politics..." p.42

I have to admit, I never really put much thought into this before but it really doesn't make any sense at all for a country "ruled by the people" to think its rude to argue/discuss politics.

He continues to discuss how blogs are rekindling the democratic flame. This reminds me of a book I read not too long ago, I think it was Ender's Game, I'm not sure when it was written but I think pre-internet, but part of the story was how 2 genius siblings hack into a world-wide "electronic forum" and pose as adults to gain political influence in an attempt to rule the world. I'm gonna look for that book.
