NEW SOUND wave
I decided to keep the original elements of my freesound experiment (see below), and to add Afram's
wave sound. This sound immediately reminded me of my upraising near the water. I have lived by Florida’s Gulf Coast for most of my life, except when I lived in Dallas. My hometown is Sarasota, which is about 45 minutes down the coast from Tampa. One thing I missed when moving to Tallahassee to attend FSU was being next to the Gulf of Mexico. I have been to Siesta Key Beach more times than I can remember, and even if there is no sun, you can hear the waves. My original freesound mix was based on sounds I associated with and/or heard in the morning last week. After hearing the wave sound, I related it to my morning last week when I composed the original freesound mix. While I was working on my schoolwork, I checked my friend Dan’s away message because he usually surfs during storms because of the waves. However, he was not surfing that day. I use to bring my “boogey board” to the beach during rainstorms because of the increased waves. After hearing this sound I also thought about the waves I saw traveling over the Sunshine Skyway from Sarasota to St. Pete. The waves were violent and fast, and reminded me of another experience a few months ago. I was with my friend James on his boat (a realtor) looking for houses on the Manatee River. We exited to the Gulf of Mexico near the Sunshine Skyway. The weather was also severe this day and the waves were enormous. Nonetheless, my friend went full throttle in the 19 foot Boston Whaler. My friend told me to hold on and not talk because similar turbulence once caused his cousin to bite off a piece of his tongue. I appreciate the water but I was glad to be in the shelter of my car driving to class and not fighting the volatile waves off the Gulf of Mexico during a storm last week. The rain, thunder, and wave elements of my composition remind me of this instance, as well as other times I have been boating during a storm. My experience with waves and with waves while boating together compelled me to add the wave element. However, if I remove the wave sound, I am left with a vivid reminder of last week in the morning: doing last minute schoolwork, thinking of ways to do my work more efficiently (i.e. using classical music to increase brain waves) instead of actually doing my work, hearing the thunder and rain, and listening to my dogs barking and running around outside. The wave element adds much more detail to my memory of the day because I can relate it to checking my friend’s away message and seeing if he is taking advantage of the waves or by associating the waves by the Skyway with a few boating ventures.
