U.N. official barred from Darfur camp
The title of this article is a little misleading. The UN official was prohibited from entering the refugee camp because he lacked the proper credentials. He claimed he had the proper papers, but had to leave to get the matter squared up. He was eventually offered an apology and allowed in. This article makes it seem that this sort of thing happens all the time:
"Other U.N. officials working in Darfur said that aid workers and U.N. staff were regularly blocked from doing their work at army checkpoints"
So I guess there have been all kinds of complaints about the obstacles the humanitarian groups face just trying to assist the victims. Are they having problems with UN official impersonators trying to sneak into refugee camps? Or, is this simply harassment? That's got to be a real slap in the face to those guys, and gals, who are out there just trying to help. I mean there is a time and a place for bureaucratic bullshit (that could be argued as well), but not when people are suffering and dying. Makes me sick.
The article also criticizes the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's failure to push Egypt to persuade the leader of Sudan to give the "ok" to a peacekeeping mission. It mentions how Sudan is unwilling to accept the idea of a joint U.N/African Union force, and has basically reverted back to the notion they can handle the situation with just the 7,000 AU soldiers. What the crap is that all about? Facing a problem on this kind of scale, who in their right mind would not accept help?
Strong analysis, John. You query the misleading headline, and in doing so, open up the issue, making it available for our understanding.
