Response Paper 1

After reading the introduction of Free Culture, I felt the story was that ideas that should be dynamic are often seized and manipulated by others. People have ideas that are often taken from them beyond their will. People also have constraints put on their ideas, both figuratively and literally. The Wright Brothers had their idea taken from them, but this spread of information helped form modern air travel. The freedom of flying was constrained by laws, which was antagonist to the Wright’s idea of air travel. Armstrong sought to improve communication between two points. His idea was stolen from him by RCA. RCA took credit, and Armstrong was left almost helpless. Ideas can also threaten others. An example is the internet, which is often regulated, thus limiting the spread of ideas. The plot is that ideas want to spread, but are often regulated. The freedom and deregulation of information is gaining more and more steam. I am not sure what the subplot is, but an educated guess would be the importance of change. The main characters are the spawners of ideas (protagonists) and those that want to squash the freedom and spread of information (antagonists). He seems to be using inductive reasoning to build upon his argument to support a conclusion that is not yet known.
