The Mess - Proposal

1. Idea/ Purpose : Bring fresh or unique perspectives to everyday man stuff. The purpose is to entertain, enlighten, maybe even inspire.

2. Form : There will be a definite journalistic feel to most of the content. I think randomness will play a part in layout and transitions, using "fun facts" or "did you ever think about blurbs" to carry the reader from one page to the next (analog). We would like to incorporate charts or graphics to illustrate thought provoking ideas. We can really test the limits of the wiki with our digital representation of the zine, mixing graphics and wordage, in ways we will discover as we go.

3. Idiom and Audience : Our audience is generally men in their 20s and 30s. However, we plan to open up the rhetoric/Idiom to where we can hit almost anyone, women, older people, even John Monroe. There is something there.. it may appear we are writing for the "everyman" yet we will appeal to the "everyperson". I'm seeing topics most anyone will recognize or even be familiar with, yet leave the reader thinking "Holy crap, I never thought of it that way" or "I thought this was going to be about". We may be biting off more than we can chew, but we are going to shoot for the stars on this one.

4. Rhetorical process : John will focus on tasking, time management, and graphics creation. Austin is the idea man and lead brainstormer. Together we will harness all the energy of creativeness that we can muster. Editing and proofreading will be as collaborative as possible, utilizing the "two heads are better than one theory" which I heard about someplace. We also like to invite all our classmates to post on our Whiteboard any ideas that they might have. For our class involvement exercise we would like everyone to write about some local extracurricular activity (ballgame, concert, bar, expo, museum, etc) that they experienced (good or bad) or would like to experience (maybe we will do it for them and tell them if they should bother)...and if they feel up to it, give it some sort of spin or uniqueness.

5. Exportable versions: 'zine! We are envisioning a masterpiece: construction paper cover (maybe even all different colors), 8.5 x 11 goodness folded right down the middle, lovingly held together by 2 staples spaced 4 inches apart. Put that together and you have something sweeter than yoohoo.

Good process notes. It's helpful to have direction and sort of a map/layout of what you'd like to accomplish and how you'd like to split up the work. I have to ask: What is the every man? -- EmerySkolfield
