the voice of the many

Page history last edited by PBworks 4 years, 12 months ago

Americans. We live in a consumer-driven culture. Advertisting focuses hard on each one of us to convince us that we'll be so much happier if only we buy product X. We're all trying to keep up with the Jones's, and we're basing more and more of our self worth and success on it. We have been like frogs boiled in water - they turned up the heat just slowly enough that we didn't notice. Start noticing...

because it's not just the advertising. This institutional powerhouse we call the corporation is a steamroller with only its destination in mind. It will crush culture, nature, and community to meet its own ends. Usually, we just wave as it passes, stopping long enough to buy ourselves something nice.

All this to say, let us, the American people, start building a culture and a community away from this manufactured capitalist funhouse. Refuse to watch commercials; refuse to live vicariously through celebrities or reality tv stars; refuse to have your values dictated to you by boardroom agendas. Instead let's go get coffee and talk about life; let's start a service project downtown; let's go to a local art show then try our own hand at painting; let's get over ourselves and join the pursuit of helping others.

We are the many; we are not homogeneous. We have been isolated from eachother to the degree that we have stopped listening to eachother, stopped caring about eachother. As we begin to talk again we build the community - we build the culture. At first it may seem like noise, but then we start listening. We come to understand eachother and all our melodies harmonize with chorus of cultural tunes - the culture we inherited from our ancestors, the culture we built on, the culture we will share with our children. Start listening more, not to the soulless corporations, but to the soulfull people you see everyday. Start speaking up; you bring value to this world - share it.
