UN and Sudan

Page history last edited by PBworks 5 years, 1 month ago

The United Nations has recognized that there is a major situation in Sudan that needs to be handled. The UN is calling the situation in Sudan “the worst non-natural humanitarian crisis in the world.” The UN, Red-Cross, Red Crescent family and many non government organizations have fielded 9,000 aid workers and almost 1,000 of them internationally. In March of 2005 the Security Council has been looking for widespread human rights violations. In 2002 the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has been investing cases. The United Nations has a broad range of bodies trying to help the people of Sudan including peacekeepers, relief workers, diplomats and many others.

There has been an agreement ending the North and South conflict in January of 2005. The Department of Political Affairs provided staff knowledge to the mediation that was lead by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD),

After the signing between the Government and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, UNAMIS was replaced and formed the United Nations Mission in Sudan. The organization is operated by the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations. The organization is trying to establish sustainable peace.

There is a new plan from the United Nation and its humanitarian partners targets to assist 5.5 million people, with a projected cost of $1.26 billion for humanitarian activities and $560 million for recovery and development

Although these are all great steps to help in the larger strategy it is sad that the situation could not been addressed early and in a timely manner. Many lives could have been saved and many other people would not be suffering the way they are now. Maybe the issue is not receiving its full media attention here in the United States but other countries and agencies are making steps in the right direction. It will take time.
